Organ Lessons

I teach organ at St James Episcopal Church in Aberdeen on Holburn junction and at King's College Chapel at the University of Aberdeen (for University students only). Occasionally I arrange lessons in other churches in Aberdeen too.
The online lessons and consultations are also available.

All ages and levels are welcome, but it is recommended to have a basic music theory knowledge and piano grade 3 level at least to start your journey with organ. However, complete beginners are also welcome as the lessons are always tailored to individual needs.

I prepare students for exams with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, Trinity College, the Royal College of Organists, and the Scottish Churches Organist Training Scheme (SCOTS). However, playing for personal enjoyment and development without pursuing exams is equally valuable and rewarding. Lessons are tailored to individual needs and may focus on various aspects of organ playing, including a diverse repertoire ranging from the Middle Ages to contemporary music, hymn playing, liturgical music, organ accompaniments, improvisation, and figured bass realisation.

The organ at King's College Chapel was built in 2004 by the renowned French organ builder Bernard Aubertin. It features three manuals and boasts an exceptionally fine mechanical action. The instrument's design is neo-Baroque with strong French Classical influences, making it particularly well-suited for performing a wide range of Renaissance and Baroque repertoire.

St James church houses two organs: a versatile 2-manual organ with pneumatic action built in 1884 by Wadsworth from Manchester and a wonderful chamber organ with mechanical action built in 1825 by Brewsher & Fleetwood from Liverpool. There is also an upright piano by Squire & Longson and a historic cabinet piano built ca. 1810 by James Ball and tuned to Young II temperament.
